On my way to the airport to head to Vegas for Interop. Interop is usually a good chance to catch up with folks, but it will be interesting to see what effect the economy has had.
In the meantime if you are in Vegas for the show be sure to stop by our booth and say hello. Also I will be speaking on the MSSP model on Tuesday, at 4:15pm. If you can stop by and listen, ask questions, etc.

Recently I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Jeanne Friedman of the RSA Conference about the great panel we have lined up for our session on making tough choices about security in a tough economy. Jeanne is a great person and though we don’t talk about it, is one of the biggest boosters of the Security Bloggers Meet up as well.

Well it was a whirlwind couple of days. I flew up to NYC early Monday morning and flew home from the Black Hat DC briefings late last night.
This was my first Black Hat DC, after attending many of the Vegas editions of the show. The DC edition is a lot of fun. Much smaller and much more low key then its glitzy Vegas brother, the DC show is really all about people who work for the government or for companies who do government work. Of course the DC area is still thriving with all of the money the government is spending.
There was not a lot of vendors, maybe a dozen all told. I caught up with a bunch of media folks and fellow security people. I also got a real kick as each person that was lucky enough to get a free ticket to Black Hat from StillSecure came by to say hello and thank me. Seeing people who read the blog and sometimes comment, but you never see in person is a lot of fun.
While Black Hat DC is not the biggest conference, it is one that I am going to add to my calendar every year!

As I think I mentioned earlier I have been doing some columns over at Government Security News magazine on security. GSN is an excellent resource for timely information and not just for public sector employees. They have some great newsletters as well. Anyway this weeks column deals with a recent admission by the Department of Justice that they sent out their own phishing emails to DoJ employees.
Though some employees and others thought it “unjust” (pun intended), this was no more than good security awareness and testing. Any 3rd party auditor worth their salt is going to try some social engineering type of exercise to probe for weakness. I think it would be good for internal security departments to do this type of thing in the commercial sector as well.

As you may know Bill Brenner, senior editor for CSO Online was our guest on a recent StillSecure, after all these years podcast. I also recorded a podcast with Bill for CSO Online on P2P, LimeWire, Facebook, etc. It was posted this week on CSO Online and you can listen to it here.
Bill is guy who besides reporting and writing on security, actually lives it. Always good to speak with him!

Getting ready to head out to Interop tomorrow. Just a quick note on some recent events I will be attending. I am really psyched to be moderating a panel on NAC (does that mean I can give all of the panel a hard time?) at the IT Hot Topics Conference 2008 at Grandover Resorts & Conference Center, in Greensboro, NC.
