Don't use Clickcaster for podcast hosting

ClickCaster

Image via Wikipedia

When I find a new product or service that I think is good I am only too happy to let the world know it on my blog. For the past almost 2 years in the notes of every episode of our podcast, I mention and thank ClickCaster for hosting our podcast.

I originally was turned on to ClickCaster by Scott Converse out in Boulder, Co who was the founder of ClickCaster.  When Scott realized that a free model was not going to pay the bills, he instituted a pay model for podcast hosting. I was only too happy to pay for the great service and stats I was receiving. Well a few months ago Scott and team sold ClickCaster to focus on their new project, Medioh!.

The new owners, nexplore promised no changes and same great service.  Since then the stats stopped working, it became harder and harder to post new content and the site was down more than it was up.  Finally after getting no satisfaction from ClickCaster I had no choice but to look for another host.  Mitchell and I have chosen Pod-o-matic to host the podcast going forward.

Of course we don't have all of the episodes moved over yet because ClickCaster isn't even up enough for us to grab all the episodes.  But most of them are up at pod-o-matic and we have already repointed the feedburner/iTunes feed.  So from here on you can hear us at pod-o-matic.

If you are looking to host your podcast, you don't have to use pod-o-matic, but don't use ClickCaster!

StillSecure, After all these years, #55 - JJ in the house

JjEpisode 55 of SSAATY is a fun one.  Mitchell and I are joined by JJ, Jenifer Jabbusch of Security Uncorked blog.  JJ is someone I have gotten to know over the last year or so and she is a lot of fun. On top of that she is very technical and huge supporter of 802.1x, NAC and security in general.

JJ, Mitchell and I talk abour Rohati, NAC, 802.1x and a bunch of other stuff in our usal rambling, stream of consciousness style.  It is about 40 minutes of informative good times.

Those wild and crazy guys are back! - SSAATY #54

PodcastMitchell and I are back!  It has been a few months, but the stars finally lined up to allow us to record a show.  It was great being back behind the microphone again.  Mitchell and I discussed a number of topics:

1. Recent penetration of the FBI
2. TJX fires an employee for disclosing lax security
3. Barracuda makes an offer for Sourcefire
4. G.hos.st

Along with the usual back and forth. Hopefully it will spur us on to do more of podcasts!.

Whats your favorite thing about the RSA conference?

It is already the end of February and the buzz is in full swing for this years RSA Conference. I usually know that it is RSA time because it takes place around my wedding anniversary.  However, this past Monday was my anniversary and no RSA.  That is because this year RSA is a little later, taking place the 2nd week of April in San Fransisco.

Over the years I have come to really enjoy RSA as a chance to catch up on the industry, friends and of course, parties!  Some of my favorites are the SC Magazine Awards show and the RSA conference party itself.  Last year one of my favorite events was the bloggers meet up that I had a hand in putting together along with Martin McKeay and a few others put together and was sponsored by Microsoft and Fortinet. That party has become legendary with posts about it here, here, here and here among other places. We had a similar event at Black Hat last year and that was fun too.  There is something about getting together with all of the folks you virtually talk to all the time via the blogosphere and put a real face and voice to a name.  We try to keep these blogging parties confined to blogger and media types, so the that everyone is comfortable sharing and conversing without the "general public" there.

Security_bloggers_meetup_2008 For this years RSA conference we wanted to do a similar type of event. However, the blogroll of security bloggers attending has grown quite a bit and of course most security media types are blogging now as well.  So we wound up getting about 100 of the top security blogging crowd together and got Fortinet, Microsoft and StillSecure to sponsor.  It is shaping up to be the bash of RSA, for me anyway.  The buzz around it was so loud that before we knew it we had a logo, our own official blog on the RSA conference site and a full committee running invites, food, drink and logistics (OK so Jennifer Leggio does most of the work)!  I am just totally pumped to meet a bunch of the folks on the RSVP list and have a great time. Truth be told I am also proud as a peacock that I played a role in putting this thing together from the beginning.

If you have a security blog or podcast, are going to be at RSA and want to attend there is information on the RSA blog page on how to get an invite. For many of you reading this, I know you are saying to yourself, "great sounds like a cool party, free drinks and I can't get an invite because I don't blog".  Well you don't have to fire up that old free blogger page you started but never finished months ago.  Through the magic of modern technology you can party along with us virtually!

We are going to have live video streaming, live audio podcasting and a live Twitter feed.  The RSA site has more details on signing up for the Twitter channel we have set up to follow on the pre-party chatter (or is it twitter) you can follow that at @RSABloggers2008. Hey it will be almost like being there.  Anyway, hope to see as many of you as possible at the party and as many of you as possible virtually if you can't make it!

StillSecure, After all these years, #53 - SSAATY meets the Network Security Podcast

MckeayRich_mogullSomeone put chocolate on our peanut butter!  Mitchell and I got on a party line to record episode 53 and who else was on? None other than that dynamic duo from the Network Security Podcast, Martin McKeay and Rich Mogull! The 4 of us had a great time talking about one of Martin's favorite topics:  Privacy. Should what you put on line be held against you by your employer. Do you have any expectation to privacy for all of this information you are posting on Twitter, Facebook, etc.  These topics and more come under the glare of the 4 of us.

We also talk about HP's boast of employing 9 of the top 11 security hackers (shades of the infamous top 59 list).  There is a special message for all security bloggers and podcasters, as well as security media types who are attending RSA, if you don't know what we are talking about contact us.

Mitchell and I also do our usual and discuss current security events. Among topics we discussed are the MySQL acquisition by Sun, Vernier Networks, and multi-gig IPS. Mitchell also makes a big announcement on a new career path (you will have to listen to find out).

Does this make Mitchell Ashley the next "Chachi"?

Happy_days OK, here is a little known fact about me.  When I was a little kid one of my favorite shows that I never, ever missed was Happy Days.  Yeah, thats right I loved Richie, Potsie, Ralph Mouth, Howard and Marion and the rest of the gang.  One of the things that was amazing about that show was like All in the Family, it gave birth to so many spin off shows.  Joanie loves Chachi is an obvious one.  Laverne and Shirley was another, and here is one you probably don't know, Mork and Mindy was actually a Happy Days spin off.

Well today I am proud to link to the first "spin off" of the StillSecure, After all these years podcast.  Mitchell Ashley, my long time co-host has started up his own podcast on his Network World Microsoft SubNet blog.  Mitchell is taking the lessons learned on our podcast and is venturing forth on his own.  Here is the link to the podcast.  Good luck to Mitchell on the new show.  Of course I was smart enough to sign Mitchell to a long term contract to be my co-host (but not exclusive I guess), so he will still be doing our show together regularly.

We should be posting a new episode next week by the way.  Again, Good Luck Mitchell on the show! Now my only question is: if this makes Mitchell Chachi, does that mean I am the "Fonz"? Nah, no way. I was never that cool ;-)

StillSecure, After all these years, podcast #51 - Brad Reese

Bradreese Happy New Year to you all!  Sorry for the delay between podcasts but Mitchell and I were pretty busy with end of year and family business.  Episode 51 of the podcast is a good one with Brad Reese of Cisco Subnet fame.  Brad has some strong opinions about Cisco and their place in the marketplace. Of course Mitchell and I have some pretty strong opinions ourselves.  All in all it makes for some lively conversation that I think you will enjoy!

StillSecure, After all these years, Podcast #50 - Mitchell & Alan

Podcast Podcast # 50 represents a return to form for Mitchell and I.  After thinking that a change was neccessary because of Mitchell's new profile, we decided that you don't mess with a good thing.  So StillSecure, After all these years is back!

This episode has no special guest.  It is just Mitchell and I talking mostly security. Mitchell does a "converging minute" episode on SaaS and virtualization changing the IT landscape. Topics Mitchell and I discuss among others are:

1. Is security slowing down the adoption of virtualization?
2. What good is "menstrual NAC" - you know the kind that only checks devices once a month and my new rules on NAC
3. The new space race to put IP technology into space being led by Cisco
4. Can UTM be 50% of the network security market?

You could be a star

Just as we did last year, Mitchell and I will be doing a special year-end podcast covering the biggest security related stories of 2007.  Also just as last year we are going to ask our friends and readers to identify the biggest stories.  So if you would like to participate you can either submit your biggest security story of the year in writing to us at podcast@stillsecure.com (be sure to include your name and a little bit about why you thought it was the big story) or you can record your thoughts and send us an mp3 file to the same address.  Again be sure to introduce yourself.

Mitchell, our panel of experts and I will discuss these stories and put in our own picks for the big story of '07.  Last year it turned out to be a great show and we think this year will be even better.  Be sure not to miss it!

Byron_anchado_2 Episode 49 of the podcast is here and it features our first interview with a Pulitzer prize winner. Byron Acohido, of USA Today.  Byron is a friend of Mitchell's and while I was away in Germany, Mitchell was lucky enough to have Byron on for an interview.

Also, Mitchell and I talk about his life after StillSecure and of course talk a bit about some of the news in the security world.

Sorry it took so long in between podcasts.  We hopefully will get back to a regular schedule now, if I ever stop traveling!

The new Abbot and Costello?

Abbot_and_costello One of the things that has made the SSAATY podcast enjoy any degree of success (in our own minds anyway) is the fact that rather than just me talking, I was smart enough to ask Mitchell Ashley to join me as co-host.  Originally Mitchell was sort of Ed McMahon to my Johnny, but over time our close personal friendship and interaction has resulted in our being equal co-hosts of the show.  I know that the energy we generate from our interaction is what powers our podcast and makes our guest interviews interesting as well.  The same goes for my friends Paul and Larry over at the PaulDotCom podcast (they actually have an even bigger cast and I have their new book, trying to find time to read it and review it).  So I am very happy to see that two friends of mine have teamed up on a podcast. Martin McKeay, one of my first friends in security blogging and whose podcast I first appeared on and Rich Mogull are teaming up with Rich as co-host on the podcast. The first episode was just posted.

I am sure that Rich will add much to Martins already great body of work.  I think they will both find that 1+1=3 when it comes to podcast co-hosts.  After so long of going solo, Martin will find having someone else to bang ideas, banter and thoughts off of is going to make the podcast much better.  Rich is a guy who has opinions on security for sure, but can tell a good story as well.  I wish both of them luck and if you get a chance, check out their show for sure!

StillSecure, After all these years, Podcast #45 - Andreas Antonopoulos, Nemertes Research

Andreas_from_numertes_2 Tonights special guest is Andreas M. Antonopoulos,  SVP and founding partner of Nemertes Research. Nemertes is an up and coming research and analysis firm. Andreas is a very sharp fellow who Mitchell and I have met with several times and we are always very impressed by him. In this interview Andreas discusses a number of topics including convergence of networking and security, buyer patterns in security and the security market in general. It is a lively almost 40 minutes of discussion. We hope to have Andreas on again soon.

Enjoy!

StillSecure, After all these years, Podcast #44, NAC Vendor Panel

Tonights episode is another in our NAC-tacular series. In addition to Mitchell and I, our guests are Michelle McLean, Senior Director of Product Marketing, ConSentry Networks and Dominic Wilde, VP of Marketing, Nevis Networks. We are all joined by our special guest star, the mouth of the south, Mike Rothman. For those who read my blog, you know that Dominic and I recently had a "debate on the merits" of various NAC technologies. I have also had my fair share of discussions with Michelle. Well the plan for today was to accentuate the positive and not get into a NAC brawl. But Rothman would have none of the cumbaya stuff and managed to stir up the conversation to bring out the passion from all of our panelists.

At the end of the day it is a good discussion on what does NAC mean today and where the market is. If you are interested in NAC, there is some good information here. Enjoy!

In case you want to see, here are pictures of our panelists. I have taken the liberty of putting their names under their pictures, in case you didn't know who was who.

The panel ran to long for Mitchell and I to do any of our regular features. We will return next week with our regular format hopefully.

StillSecure, After all these years, Podcast #42 - NAC, NAP, TCG - Whats the difference?

Podcast We're back!  Sorry for the hiatus, but I guess Mitchell and I caught a case of Summeritis or maybe we were just waiting for Cisco to join tonights panel.  In any event, we are back with a great podcast.

Episode 42 is a NACfest! Our special guests are Steve Hanna, co-chair of the TNC/TCG, as well as distinguished engineer at Juniper and Amith Krishnan, senior product manager of Microsoft's security technologies including NAP.  Steve, Amith, Mitchell and I discuss the finer points of the recent demonstration of the interoperability between NAP and the TCG standards and what this means for you.

We dive pretty deep in just how this interoperability works and what Windows Server 2008 will mean to those interested in NAC.  We also talk a bit about what this means for Cisco and other NAC vendors.  Does this represent the future of NAC?  What other functionality is envisioned?  Will it cover non-Windows operating systems?  These and other questions are all answered in the show.  Enjoy!

HP ProCurve rides the convergence wave

HP ProCurve announced two products that will further networking and security convergence today.  According to this article by Matt Hamblen at ComputerWorld, ProCurve (which is 2nd in networking port shipments globally) will release ProCurve Network Immunity Manager. It sounds like some sort of IDS type of detection, maybe behavior and signature based that works with ProCurve switches to throttle or stop bad traffic from its origin.  The second product due out in the 3rd quarter, is called ProCurve Network Access Controller 800.  It sounds like a NAC device that works hand in hand with ProCurve's Indentity Driven Manager.  Very interesting.  ProCurve CTO Paul Congdon is this weeks guest on the podcast and he may have a thing or two to say about this.  If you get a chance listen in.

Interestingly, Rob Whiteley of Forrest-er and "network NAC is dead" infamy, says that this network based NAC seems to be a good thing.  Geez Rob, why didn't you say anything about PERM?  Isn't that the future and this network based access control stuff history?  I can't imagine what would make you seem to change position on this.
